stone arch bridge

The West Townshend Stone Arch Bridge, originally built in 1910 by local mason James Otis Follett, is a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This restoration project, led by Standing Stone with our team’s involvement, aimed to preserve the structural and historical integrity of this remarkable bridge. Supported in part by a grant from the National Park Service, the renovation carefully balanced modern techniques with traditional craftsmanship to honor its original construction.

The work included stabilizing the foundation with granite blocks, reconstructing the spandrel and wing walls, and integrating original stones cataloged and reused in their precise locations. Thoughtful attention to detail ensured the preservation of this enduring structure, which continues to stand as a testament to the beauty and strength of traditional stonework. We’re grateful to have been a part of revitalizing this piece of Vermont history.
